STS 01/02 certification
Professional qualification to operate in European standard scenarios. Online theory and a practical flight exam with certified instructors.
- Official theory exam on the AESA platform, supervised by webcam
- In-person practical exam with certified instructors (2 h of flying)
- Automatic A2 validation when you pass, if you do not hold it yet
Who is it for?
Leisure
You fly as a hobby, without working with the drone. You do not need the STS: start with the A1/A3.
Photo and video
You shoot in cities and close to people with drones over 4 kg or outside the open category.
Professional
Inspections, surveying, agriculture, emergencies. Long-range and populated-environment operations for companies.
What you can and cannot do
Standard scenarios are defined in Regulation (EU) 2019/947, Appendix 1. This is what the STS certification allows you to do.
- Operate in the specific category without an individual operational authorisation
- STS-01: fly within visual line of sight (VLOS) in a populated environment with class C5 drones
- STS-02: fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) in a sparsely populated environment with C6 drones, up to 2 km with observers
- Fly up to 120 m high with drones up to 25 kg
- Work for companies holding an operational declaration before AESA
- Fly over assemblies of people
- Operate on your own without your company filing the operational declaration with AESA
- Get certified in STS-02 only: it builds on STS-01
- Use drones without C5 (STS-01) or C6 (STS-02) class marking
- Operations outside the standard scenario: they require an individual authorisation (SORA)
How it works
Enrol and start right away
Choose scenarios, theory and site. Enter the virtual classroom immediately.
Train at your pace with an instructor
40 h of online theory. Theory exam at AESA supervised by webcam: 30 questions with the A2, 40 without it.
Practical exam and certificate
2 h of flying with an instructor at your site. We send the PASS to AESA and your qualification is certified.
Three exam questions
Questions of the same type as the AESA STS theory exam (30 with the A2, 40 without it, 75% to pass). This is how you study in the Vister classroom: question, answer and explanation.
The AESA exam is free. Why train with Vister rather than alone?
It is free and it will stay free: Vister does not charge for the exam. What you pay for is arriving prepared, and the practical exam with an instructor.
Pass the theory first time
The STS exam requires 75%. Our mock exams replicate the format, timing and level, with every answer explained.
Subjects in order
Advanced meteorology, performance, human factors, risk, airspace and ATS, emergencies and environment assessment: what AESA asks for, without noise.
Real flight bases
Mallorca, Tarragona, Madrid and Córdoba. Instructors who fly every day with Matrice, Inspire and Mavic.
Validation included
If you do not hold the A2, the exam includes its questions and it is validated when you pass. One less procedure.

Frequently asked questions
It is not mandatory. If you do not hold the A2, the STS exam includes the corresponding additional questions and, upon passing, you automatically obtain the validation.
Not quite. You can get certified in STS-01 alone, or in STS-01 and STS-02 together. What is not possible is certifying only in STS-02: every manoeuvre, skill and requirement of STS-02 builds on the competencies of STS-01, so you have to pass it first.
We have flight bases in Mallorca, Tarragona, Madrid and Córdoba.
STS-01 requires drones with C5 class marking. STS-02 requires drones with C6 class marking.
You can choose between a 2- or 4-hour practical flight pack with an instructor.
The certification qualifies you as a pilot. To operate, you also need your company to hold the corresponding operational declaration before AESA.
No. AESA does not charge a fee for the exams: they are free. What you pay for is the training, the study materials and the exam preparation, which AESA does not provide.
Yes. If you already have the study materials and have prepared the theory on your own, you can enrol in the "without theory" option and take only the practical exam with us.
